Week 19. Jan 15-19

Week 19 January 15th-19th

I hope all of you are feeling good about our first week back at school.
I hope you all got your Robo-call from SJPS on Thursday night
telling you about the snow day Friday.

If you did not get a call/email, please call the office,
so we can get you on the list for future closures.

This last week we reviewed all of our school procedures and expectations.
The children had a great first week. They met our 5th grade buddies that will be going ice skating with us.  We hope to meet with them again before Thursday.

Some of our students came down sick with flu like symptoms.

That is how we lower the risk of it spreading.

Problem Solving in the classroom

In our classroom, we are using Green and Red choice boards to help us
discuss what we want our classroom to :
1. Look Like.
2. Sound Like
3. Feel Like

We created rules and responsibilities for our class.
We created a list of solutions to everyday problems.
We pledged to do our best to make sure school is a safe and
comfortable place for all.

I just want to stress that no child is perfect and at school
we have a wide variety of children with
an equally wide variety of challenges.
If you or your child has concerns about something in the class,
please contact me directly so we can meet and address the concerns.

It is very important not to discuss children other than your own with other parents.
If you hear other parents with concerns about the classroom,
please encourage others to reach out to me, with those concerns.

Ice skating
Your child will need a helmet (Bike or Skate) and extra long socks.

Week 18 Jan 8-12, 2024

Happy 2024!

After a very busy break traveling to London and Paris with my family,  I am excited to
come back and start the new year with all of my wonderful students.
January is always a wonderful time to see all the growth in the kids from the previous fall.
It is also a great time to review expectations and routines.

Much of what we will be doing this week is remembering what it looks like and feels
like to be at school all day.  Expect your child to come home tired and most likely hungry.
Most have become used to eating throughout the day over break and
the routine of 2 snacks and 1 lunch can be a little tough for some.

We are expecting snowy weather so I ask that children come with labeled snow gear:
Snow pants, boots, gloves and hats should all have your child's name.
I find duct tape and sharpie can work well if there is no label to mark.

We will be beginning our unit 3 in Grapeseed and
introducing proper hand writing formation.
I will send home a note about this unit and a handout with the language
that we will use plus the steps to writing each letter.

Handwriting is developmental and we are looking for process not perfection.
At home you can practice air writing with their whole arm or finger.

We do not want the children to feel frustrated but we are trying to teach
good habits and build up muscle memory and hand strength.

January Calendar

Week 17. Dec 18-22, 2023

Holiday Dress Up Week

We are the ending this year with a fun week of dressing up.
Of course this is optional and we understand that some children
are more comfortable wearing their every day clothing to school.
That is perfectly fine.

Monday, Dec. 18th - Christmas PJ Day

Tuesday, Dec.19th - Santa and Mrs. Claus Day

Wednesday, Dec. 20th - Elf/Nutcracker Day

Thursday, Dec. 21st - Grinch Day

Friday, Dec. 22nd - Ugly Sweater Day

We will continue reading different versions of the Gingerbread Boy
 and comparing characters and ending.
Here are some versions we have read so far

The Gingerbread Man by Jim Aytesworth
The Gingerbread Boy by Paul Galdone
The Gingerbread Girl by Lisa Ernst
The Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett
The Gingerbread Friends by Jan Brett

The children did a wonderful job making predictions about what might happen next.
They are really learning how to take a story and expand their understanding.
Feel free to look up these stories online or at your library and discuss them with your child.

We also learned about Friends of 10.
These are the pairings of numbers that add together to make 10.
There are some great songs on youtube that will help your child become
familiar with this import math concept.

Grinch Party Thursday Dec 21
11-12
We still need one more table volunteer and a couple more snack donations.

This is the last blog of this calendar year.
I wish you all a safe and relaxing holiday season.
I look forward to see all of you in the new year.

I will not be reachable over break but will be responding to all email on January 7th.
If you have anything that you would like to share with me that has happened over
break feel free to email me and I will contact you if needed on that Sunday.

Sometimes the transition back to school after a long break can be a little rocky.
We understand that and will be giving all the needed extra hugs.

Week 14. Nov 27- Dec 1.

Week 14 - What will you wear?

As a little change of pace, we are switching up our theme to clothing.
This goes along with our Unit 2 Grapeseed vocabulary, songs and stories.
We will be discussing how we dress changes according to the seasons
and the order in which we put on winter clothes.

Make sure that your child has snow pants, boots, hat and mittens as we enter the winter season.
All items should be marked with child's name/ Initials (duct tape with sharpie markers works well)  Please send waterproof mittens, knit gloves get wet and stay wet for the whole day.
Also check your backpack for wet clothes daily.
Many of the changes of clothes are from warm weather.
Now is a good time to change out for long sleeves and long pants.
